Dear Fellow Conservatives,

Happy Independence Day! As we enjoy parades and picnics, and fireworks and family, I would like to offer three quotes that make me reflect on why we celebrate this day. Two quotes come from leaders with a mixed legacy, and one comes from a great American founder:

“Liberty has never come from the government. Liberty has always come from the subjects of it. The history of liberty is a history of resistance.” –Woodrow Wilson

“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” –Nelson Mandela

“We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” –Thomas Jefferson

Roll back creeping tyranny. Build a better tomorrow for everyone. Guard the God-given rights of humanity. On July 4th, 1776, fifty-six Americans signed their names at the bottom of a document, pledging “our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor” to make those very goals a reality.

On July 4th, 2015, I’m not just celebrating that I have more freedom than most of the people on planet Earth. I’m not just celebrating that I’m proud to be an American. I’m celebrating the opportunity to carry the same torch of liberty lit by those fifty-six men 239 years ago today.

Will you carry that torch with me?
