02/19/2013: “Arbor Day Trees Find New Home”

San Juan Island’s spirit of cooperation and support was on display once again at the Friday Harbor Community Athletic Fields. Even the weather pitched in with a sunny day on February 17th when 65 Sitka Spruce were planted by volunteers from Friday Harbor Grange 225, the San Juan Lions Club, and with help from local children.

The Sitka Spruce is a fast growing and large tree which should create a stately drive into the athletic field area and parking lot, as well as providing shade and beauty to the facility

Don Galt, the driving force behind the “Field of Dreams,” arranged to have the locations for the trees staked out.

The spruce trees were remnants from last year’s Arbor Day bare root tree give-away that had been potted and nurtured by Alex Gavora for the past 10 months for this use.

Alex’s sister Pauli Gavora began Arbor Day in San Juan county when she decide to organize an annual event for Lopez, Orcas and San Juan; and for the past 16 years she and John Evans organized and donated over 24,000 trees on the three major islands to the citizens of San Juan County.

The new tree-lined drive is a fitting memorial to Pauli, who lost her battle with cancer in 2012.

Why Parents Don’t Need to Know

You may already know that Washington State is one of a small minority of states that allow a minor girl to get an abortion without her parent’s consent or awareness. A bill in the State Senate (SB 5614) would require parents to be notified 48 hours before an abortion is performed.

Why Parents Don't Need to Know

A recent poll showed that 65% of Washingtonians agreed with the idea of parental notification, suggesting the issue is much more about parental rights than the more divisive issue of abortion.Still, the abortion industry in Washington, which makes millions of dollars giving both prescription contraceptives and abortions to minor girls without their parent’s awareness, is strongly opposed.

In committee testimony against the bill, their argument was essentially this. “Of course it’s best that parents are involved in their daughters decisions, but unfortunately not every girl has a loving supportive family. Some parents are dangerous to their children, therefore, it will put girls in danger if we require parents to be notified.” Continued

HB 1874 Federal immigration policy Little -2
2013 House Bill 1874: Addressing federal immigration policy enforcement

  • Introduced by Rep. Luis Moscoso, (D – Mountlake Terrace) (D) on February 13, 2013, prohibits law enforcement from detaining an individual on the basis of immigration status after that individual becomes eligible for release from criminal custody, unless, at the time the individual becomes eligible for release, a criminal background check reveals the individual was previously convicted of a most serious offense or violent offense. This act effectively withdraws Washington from the federal government’s secure communities program. This act provides that no law enforcement officer or agency shall make an individual available for interview by any employee of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Agency or the Border Patrol.
    • Referred to the House Public Safety Committee on February 13, 2013. Continued
