You may already know that Washington State is one of a small minority of states that allow a minor girl to get an abortion without her parent’s consent or awareness. A bill in the State Senate (SB 5614) would require parents to be notified 48 hours before an abortion is performed.

Why Parents Don't Need to Know

A recent poll showed that 65% of Washingtonians agreed with the idea of parental notification, suggesting the issue is much more about parental rights than the more divisive issue of abortion.Still, the abortion industry in Washington, which makes millions of dollars giving both prescription contraceptives and abortions to minor girls without their parent’s awareness, is strongly opposed.

In committee testimony against the bill, their argument was essentially this. “Of course it’s best that parents are involved in their daughters decisions, but unfortunately not every girl has a loving supportive family. Some parents are dangerous to their children, therefore, it will put girls in danger if we require parents to be notified.” Continued

2013 House Bill 1874: Addressing federal immigration policy enforcement

  • Introduced by Rep. Luis Moscoso, (D – Mountlake Terrace) (D) on February 13, 2013, prohibits law enforcement from detaining an individual on the basis of immigration status after that individual becomes eligible for release from criminal custody, unless, at the time the individual becomes eligible for release, a criminal background check reveals the individual was previously convicted of a most serious offense or violent offense. This act effectively withdraws Washington from the federal government’s secure communities program. This act provides that no law enforcement officer or agency shall make an individual available for interview by any employee of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Agency or the Border Patrol.
    • Referred to the House Public Safety Committee on February 13, 2013. Continued

San Juan County Republicans in Olympia

Your State Committee Woman Sandra Frinell, State Committee Man Levi Rawls and Chair Michelle Loftus visited our elected representatives in Olympia this week. We presented them with our opinions on bills working through committees.Even though our Leg District 40 representatives are very liberal we were heard and respected. We also met with the Republican Caucus who gave us much encouragement and urged us to work in our county.Did you know they pray before their weekly Monday meetings? Did you know our Chair Kirby Wilbur is there every Monday morning?Helpful conversations were also engaged with our Sec of State and Sec of Agriculture.State Chair Kirby Wilbur also encouraged our work. Mr Wilbur will be here Saturday for our Lincoln Day Dinner.

We will be posting weekly bills of concern and the phone numbers of our elected officials. The legislatures say that their ears perk up if they get 20 calls on a bill. So let’s call. It is easy.

Good Sources to research include online The Current and The Washington Policy Center. I also enjoy watching TVW. Updates from Kirby and all of you can be forwarded as well. Let’s get busy.
