Happy Independence Day! State budget deal, next SJCRP event, fairbooth, and more

Greetings Conservatives!
Happy 4th of July!

I hope for our nation’s Independence Day
that you are surrounded by friends and family!
May God Bless America!

Fourth of July!

There is so much to be grateful for in this great nation. We sometimes are guilty of dwelling on what is bad or worse or negative. Let us all remember the extraordinary level of personal safety that we all enjoy, the longer lives, the greater opportunity; the ability to talk to relatives half a world away, reliable power and clean water. Many places in the world lack these things. Although things may vary from bad to good over the course of a human life, our own lives when placed beside our great-great grandparents enjoy a level of prosperity and peace that must’ve been almost impossible for them to imagine.

Yet sometimes there is something lost in our affluence. I have lived in many places around the world, and observed that people are often happier than those I encounter in the west. Our prosperity allows us to not need each other, and it erodes our sense of community and family ties. Humans are social creatures that need to belong and contribute. The value of remaining together as extended families, even into retirement and old age, have repeatedly been shown to be tremendously beneficial to a sense of well being and community. And yet when a nation reaches a certain level of affluence, the first thing people do is separate into their immediate families.

We are blessed to live in a county that still has a sense of community. Many places do not. In many places nobody even knows their neighbors names. Please consider volunteering to help with the Republican Party fair booth, a wonderful annual event that has “community” written all over it. You can sign up here. I have done it many times, and only rarely do you encounter people who are determined to make things difficult.

I wish you all the best! (Remember, personal fireworks are illegal)

Next SJCRP Event: July 15th

Central Committee meeting, 11:30 am. Later that day, 2 pm, ice cream social. No charge! Please bring cookies or brownies to share. Ed Kilduff will be speaking to us about water issues, rural development, and the Hirst decision. Both events at Earthbox Inn and Spa in Friday Harbor.

All details on the website here.

 WA State Budget Deal

This week we avoided a budget shutdown in Washington State. You may have heard on the news of many state services shutting down, but it appears that will not be the case. Seattle Times reports. See also “Proposed Washington state budget boosts spending by 13.5%” here.

The main issue that made the budget difficult this year was the McCleary decision, where the state supreme court said that the state was not keeping its (state) constitutional obligation to adequately fund education. The conservative Washington Policy Center has an excellent article on the McCleary decision.

Although the budget deal announced 6/29 is very new and has not yet been fully covered, they also posted a brief piece explaining the new budget. It seems that state property taxes will go up, and that the state will be looking for new revenue streams (*ahem* — taxes) to cover the budget increases.

The state legislature has been trying to find a way to deal with this for several years. This is just one state supreme court decision among many that has broadened the role of government in our daily lives. I cannot comprehend how a judge would think himself better qualified than our elected representatives to determine what adequate funding for education means.

These kinds of things illustrate how much state politics matter — and yet they are often ignored. It makes sense to point out here that Jinyoung Lee, GOP candidate for the 45th legislative district, is under attack by the left! This isn’t suprising, since she is in the lead financially. This race will determine who controls the state senate. Her campaign says that the Seattle, “Eastside Leadership Council” is pumping hundreds of thousands of dollars from out of state special interest groups in attack ads against her.

 Local and State News Digest

Research by the UW into the effects of Seattle’s new minimum wage have shown that the measure has been harmful. So what did the mayor do? Try to find a different study! WA Policy Center ran a 10-part series on this, the most recent one here, and even the Seattle Times criticized town hall.

SJC Democrats are being investigated by the (state) Attorney General’s office for financial irregularities (Journal and the Guardian report)– apparently for the most part late recording of payments and that sort of thing. I’m not inclined to may hay from this, Tim Eyman, the Whatcom County Republicans, and the King County Democrats were all penalized for a range of violations. Election finance law is incredibly complex and seems to be designed to keep anybody not a lawyer or accountant from being able to run for office, and every volunteer organization struggles to get such unpleasant work taken care of responsibly. We’ll see what happens and how serious the charges turn out to be.

It’s been a rough few years for CenturyLink and by extension all of us, but this attitude “Centurylink decline to explain landline outage” doesn’t help. Rockisland discussed some of these issues in their June newsletter here. (for those who care: the part about the theoretical maximums for copper cable is not entirely correct, by twisting two cables together you actually can get 25 mb/s ADSL in F.H., but that’s splitting hairs… or cables, and it’s true that a single cable cannot.)

On the subject of utilities, If electricity costs are going up, know that it’s not just here. “Seattle-area customers can expect to pay more for electricity starting this fall,” Seattle TImes.

F.H. is expanding it’s parking on the former Browne’s Lumber lot, located at 330 Spring Street. Journal and the Guardian reports.

Orcas Recycling Services finalizes lease agreement with county. Sounder reports.

Orcas school board has proposed two separate levies, one for repairs and the other for the new track. They will be voted on in November. Sounder reports.

It’s time to turn in petitions for I-552, which was supported by the WA State Republican Party and Just Want Privacy. Unless you agree with what the democrats say about it.

WSU had a data theft, and 1 million people had their data compromised. I happen to be one of them, although I never went to WSU. Seattle Times reports. It’s worth learning how to detect phishing attempts and scans.

The WA legislature approved a paid family leave law. Seattle Times reports.

An example of courage when an Imam protects the man who attacked his congregation until police can arrive and properly arrest him. USA Today.

How to Defeat Weaponize Empathy.” A PCO sent this to me, and it resonated.

Labor unions are going after the Freedom Foundation, a conservative WA State thinktank. The Blaze reports.

Speaker Ed Kilduff:

hydrologist and water issues expert

The Hirst decision allows government entities to block the drilling of wells if the well could conceivably impact local streams or rivers. The broadness of this ruling has had a chilling effect on rural development. It is nothing less than an assault on rural living. We look forward to hearing Mr. Kilduff’s remarks on this subject and the issue of water in general. We have covered the Hirst decision in some detail here.

We are working to organize events on Lopez and Orcas over the summer as well, so please don’t feel forgotten if you live on Orcas or Lopez!

A Note on our New Email Server

This week I helped my grandmother with her email because she was having trouble finding the important emails from her family because she was deluged with other emails. I deleted spam email after spam email and hit “unsubscribe” over and over. I did the same with another relative. It reminded me how much I hate spam. I never want to be spam. If you do not wish to receive this email please click unsubscribe at the bottom of this email or drop me an email as sjcrpchair@gmail.com.

I hope you find these emails worth your time: I try not to overburden your inbox, and we don’t share your email address with anybody else. Only two members of the executive board have access to the list. If you have comments feel free to drop me an email. They do get to me! We have had a tremendous response to this newsletter and many people have reached out to me over it. Thank you for your support!

The 45th Legislative District

Some of you may be aware that the seat left by the late State Senator Andy Reid is going to have a special election. Because control of the state senate is so close, this election effectively decides which party will control the state senate. Seattle Times reports.

This week GOP candidate Jinyoung Lee Englund was the first candidate to reach the $500,000 in donation mark. Candidate Englund’s husband is an active duty service member, and she’s from Woodinville Washington — where I was raised!

She remarked: “I am blown away by the outpouring of support from people of all walks of life,” said Englund. “People understand that each dollar donated to help us win puts us closer to lowering car tab fees, preventing a new state income tax from being imposed on us, and holding Olympia accountable to steward our hard-earned tax dollars wisely.” You can read more about this on her website here, and we covered this in some detail on our website here.

If you want to do something to help sway the political situation in our state, supporting candidate Englund is a great campaign to support.

Local and State News Digest:

I do not necessarily endorse the things I post here, I post them because I hope conservatives will speak out for conservative principles. Being informed is an important step towards that. There is a full listing of local newspaper contacts on our webpage here. If you notice an outdated link please let me know. Many of the links are sent to me by others — please consider sending me your links to sjcrpchair@gmail.com.

Last week we mentioned a letter in the Journal by Republican PCO and contractor Barry Cave about tiny homes (what is a PCO? click here). This week the Journal ran an editorial advocating for zoning changes to permit tiny homes, and the Journal ran a full feature on the subject by Hayley Day (also in Islands Weekly here). This isn’t something everyone agrees on, but it’s an interesting problem and it’s nice to see people trying to find inventive solutions.

A few weeks ago I covered in detail the affordable housing conversation in SJC.

There was a letter in the Sounder advocating against the proposed vacation house permit tax.

There have been a lot of letters in the paper over the last few weeks defending public lands, as an example, this week in the Sounder. This would be another area for conservatives to write about to the paper.

“Comment on draft plan for Mount Ben Preserve” on June 29th. Journal reports.

“WSF to hold four public meetings about proposed rate increase,” Sounder reports and Islands Weekly reports.

Lopez library seeking a new board member. Islands Weekly reports.

Welcome to our New Newsletter!

This week we completed a major update of our mailing list. If you are receiving this for the first time, that may be why. It includes collected data from the Lincoln Day event, Caucus, membership dues, and more. In light of the shootings this week it seems a propitious time for this update: we want to tell as many people as possible that we are here, and that we are serious about conservative principles.

That said, if you wish to unsubscribe, please email me at sjcrpchair@gmail.com. I will remove you, no questions asked. You can see examples of the newsletters that I send out weekly (rarely more) from last week, the week before, or just scroll through our website sjcrp.org. It typically has one or two discussion topics, a listing of local and state news, and a county calendar. This is an unusually long newsletter, most are much shorter.

Announcing our Next Event: July 15th, SJI

I am very happy to announce that our next event will be on Saturday July 15th. It will be at Earthbox in Friday Harbor (which does have AC, for those who are curious). We are fortunate to have Ed Kilduff speak to us. He cleared his schedule to make sure he was available.

Mr. Kilduff is a hydrologist, board member of Community Treasures, and has spoken on the radio and at other events on water issues in WA state. In light of the Hirst decision this seems a good choice. It will be a great time to get together as conservatives and learn something while we’re at it. It marks our commitment to being more active in our community, and to hold more events.

Please mark the date! More details forthcoming.

“Sanctuary County” and the San Juans

Our State Committeeman Rick Boucher was in the ferry line waiting to go to the legislative district meeting this week and had the following encounter: “I went to the Dump on Orcas last Sunday afternoon. A Gal was there collecting signatures. It appeared that at each vehicle to approach the pay booth she approached and asked the following question while the driver was waiting to move forward.

“I’ll make this real simple for you.  Do you support the immigration policies of President Trump?”  I said, “Yes.”

She said, “Then I don’t want to talk to you.” And walked away.  I was not presented with the petition to sign.” [end]

Sure enough, this week in the Islands Weekly: “Immigrant Rights Group protects local immigrants.” Firstly, this is highly misleading. They may be trying to protect illegal immigrants, which is not the same thing as “local immigrants.” I know this because many legal immigrants came to our Lincoln Day dinners and talked to me. Nobody dislikes illegal immigration more than legal immigrants. Much like affirmative action, it casts a pall on those who legitimately succeed.

It would be nice to see some pushback from conservatives on this issue.

On this subject, a Bill Clinton video has been circulating through conservative email and social media. (CPAN). The instructions are “Donald Trump should just televise this Bill Clinton speech from 1995 and then simply state “I’m Donald Trump and I approve this message…” Not one word of commentary needs to be added.” It’s a very short video, about 84 seconds.

Local and State News Digest

We have a listing of local news sources on the website here, including emails for editors to submit letters. It was updated this week. For those of you who are new, my posting a link here does not mean I endorse the article. In fact, many times I post them specifically so that Republicans can reply to them.

Michelle Loftus posted on our website “Want to make more for doing less? Ask Planned Parenthood how,” and “Why the ACLU and Democrats are targeting Catholic Hospitals.”

County Council OKs Clure property purchase by San Juan County Land Bank (Journal of the San Juans, in the Sounder here and Islands Weekly here). Note also the Trails Committee minutes here.

Our own PCO Barry Cave had a letter published on the affordable housing debate. (Journal of the San Juans).

Want to pay more income tax? Seattle is considering its very own income tax for those who just love taxes. Does anybody want to guess how long it will take for the threshold to be lowered? (Seattle Times reports)

A teenager had his Trump t-shirt photoshopped out in his yearbook photo. It just goes to show how negatively the left views Trump: they are treating support for President Trump as hate speech or a racist slogan. Amazing, really. I usually avoid national news since it’s better covered elsewhere, but I couldn’t resist posting this. I appreciated that USA Today covered this.

The Seattle Times ran an article this week about illegal immigrants using WA State to get into Canada.

Newsletter: Initiative 552, local news

GREETINGS CONSERVATIVES!

State Initiative I-552

I received this email from “Just Want Privacy,” an advocacy group:

“Dear San Juan County Republicans,

On May 20th the Washington State Republican Party passed a resolution stating:

“Be it resolved that the Washington State Republican Party calls on all Washington state voters to sign and gather signatures to certify initiative 1552 before the July 7thdeadline.”

Our State needs to gather 330,000 signatures supporting this petition by July 1st to place this initiative on the November ballot.  Divide that number by 39 counties, and each county needs to get approximately 8,400 signatures….but 1,600 signatures from   San Juan County  would be wonderful!

If each Republican accepts the challenge of gathering signatures then we can have a great impact in this important issue that will bless our community for years to come!

Here is the challenge:  Will each GoP member take responsibility to fill out 1 full petition page (20 signatures on each page.)?    We know some  will get more and some will get less; that is completely acceptable.  Remember every signature counts!!”

I have placed the full article on our website here. For Just Want Privacy’s website, go here. We need people who are willing to help organize this.

Newsletter: WSRP Meetings, Affordable Housing debate

Hello Conservatives!

We hope your June is going well!

There is no June event due to scheduling conflicts.

Our next event is tentatively planned for the middle of July.

More details to follow.

WSRP State Committee Meetings

Two weekends ago, May 19-20, the WA State Republican Party (WSRP) central committee met. Each county sends a state committeeman, a state committeewoman, and usually a chairman to meet together once a quarter. I typically send Vice-chair Lynda Gerpheide in my place. To read State Committeewoman Carter’s report on the state meetings click here (on SJCRP website).

Thank you Cindy Carter, Rick Boucher, and Lynda Gerpheide for attending. This represents a significant expense both in financial resources and in time. It is an act of patriotism.

Affordable Housing

You may have noticed quite a few articles and letters regarding housing in San Juan County. Most recently, the Journal published an article this week called “Planning commission suggests annual fee for all vacation rentals.” This is a follow up (also by Hayley Day) on their article in the Islands Weekly last week here. There was also a letter, “Protect our way of life against vacation rentals.”

Lopez Community Land Trust submitted an article to the Islands Weekly this week. They are also planning to build a few new homes on Lopez.

This issue has been getting a lot of coverage, and it’s something being talked about all over the county:

From the SJCRP May 29th newsletter: “both the Islands Weekly and the Sounder reported on pushback to proposed restrictions on vacation rental permits.”

From the May 18th newsletter: “In these anti-development times, it was refreshing to see the Journal advocate in favor of tourism.”

From the April 29th newsletter: “San Juan Island Real Estate update report. This is of interest to property owners and would-be property owners alike. Island Guardian reports.”

From the March 29th newsletter: “A group of people (including several prominent dems) are blaming vacation rentals for the lack of affordable housing in our county. You can read the statement here. (Journal)  Do you agree?”

From the March19th newsletter: “Seattle flounders in dealing with its housing crisis with a number of measures that only discourage investment in housing: here and here. (Seattle Times). Locally in SJC we are struggling with this issue, and liberals have proposed vacation rental permit changes.”

From the March 13th newsletter: “On Lopez, the Land bank is making a purchase. Islands’ Weekly reports.”

Also note the SJC Planning Commission and SJC Housing Bank Commission on the county website.

I’d love to see letters in all of the local papers across the county on this issue. We don’t all need to agree on what the “conservative answer” would be, but we should certainly add our individual voices to the debate. Sound Publishing has a weekly deadline of Friday, which is printed on Wednesday. Online papers like the Island Guardian don’t really have deadlines.

Local News and Links of Interest

Hospital Districts have been in the news quite a bit lately. On Orcas, there was a full length article regarding UW Medicine and Orcas Island. The Journal’s article about the new SJCPHD#1 contract with Planned Parenthood was updated on the 31st. I saw one letter in the paper. Michelle Loftus posted about it on the website here. On this issue I just publish whatever I see, for or against, because I work for SJCPHD#1. I am making no judgments on this issue.

In an Island Guardian article entitled “Gold Standard Designation SJI National Monument,” they report that our county monument lands have “join[ed] ten other areas across the country to be recognized as an exemplary outdoor area.”

OPALCO is planning a solar array for Decauter island. Island Guardian reports.

The Sounder reports that Jay Inslee published a notice of Judicial Vacancy, apparently indicating that Judge Eaton is retiring soon. Attorney Steve Brandli has applied for the job. Sounder reports.

A nice article about Memorial Day by King County Republicans.

New state law about distracted driving. Seattle Times.

Governor Inslee is speaking at the Lopez’s high school graduation on June 10th. Islands Weely reports.

A surprising editorial for the USA Today:  “The Obama administration’s illegal spying may have been worse than Watergate.

Many of you emailed me about Comey’s firing. I admit I also felt quite indignant that his firing was seen as either a surprise or some scandal. I was surprised that Obama hadn’t fired him. Unfortunately, most of the emails included attachments and such that are hard to forward. However, if you were frustrated by how the media has handled this, rest assured that you are not alone.
